Scotland’s national body for swimming say they are “shocked” by Stirling Council’s decision to axe school swimming lessons.

Scottish Swimming is the national governing organisation for swimming, para swimming, diving, high diving, open water swimming, water polo, artistic swimming and masters swimming in Scotland.

“Primary 4 and Primary 5 have been identified as the most effective stage for a school swimming and water safety intervention within the school curriculum. Children have a physical literacy level at this age that can be transferred to the pool easily, and more importantly, it is an age where the fear and stigma of being unable to swim hasn’t set in.

“There is a clear correlation between a child’s socio-economic background and the ability to swim. Often children who cannot swim are more vulnerable or from more deprived backgrounds. Stopping school swimming is not an inclusive approach. It will widen the deprivation gap with a real risk of non-participation in high school for fear of embarrassment.”

“We urge the council to reconsider its position in relation to primary school swimming and reverse the decision to remove school swimming for primary age groups.

In March, Stirling Council’s children and young people convener defended the decision, saying there had been no choice but to ditch P5 swimming lessons given the budget constraints.
