There's £1.7m in funding on the way
The Pendle Wavelengths swimming pool and leisure centre in Nelson looks set for an upgrade with £1.7million of Nelson Town Deal money plus other funds.
At the executive, Independent Coun Asjad Mahmood, leader of Pendle Council, backed the Wavelengths investment. He said: "In the Nelson Town Deal and match-funding activity, rising costs and other factors have been issues. But these improvements will be affordable and deliverable, and will increase visitor numbers. It will also bring extra people to Nelson. It will be cost-neutral."
"Also there have been other leisure recommendations and reports in the past, such as the Urban Altitude high ropes centre and the Inside Spa. It was said they would make money but they did not. So I am sceptical about consultants saying this Wavelengths plan will bring in money. "If Pendle Council is seen as investing in Wavelengths prior to decisions on other leisure centres, with questions about costs and budget strains in future effecting every resident, then that could cost us in terms of social cohesion."But Coun Mahmood said: "Pendle has had millions of pounds invested in the two big towns. We are seeing the results in Colne with The Muni, Hippodrome, Little Theatre and Colne Market Hall. There is also potential for housing and apartments.
