The big goal is to train robots to assemble parts and materials in space through safer navigation and other technology.
Innovative technologies are essential for effective and successful space exploration. Rovers that traverse the surfaces of Mars and the Moon are outfitted with software, microprocessors, and a variety of other high-tech features.
SwRI’s Space Robotics Center features an air-bearing table to simulate low-gravity conditions, allowing engineers to test robot applications for future deployment in zero gravity. The big goal is to train robots to assemble parts and materials in space through safer navigation. Engineers have also developed software and modeling tools to enable robots to “plan motion for complex, on-orbit conditions.” Along with these initiatives, the institution is developing efficient, low-power vision systems for lunar rovers and tiny aerial aircraft.
Localization for Lunar Rovers: This feature uses a Ranger localization system that guides lunar rovers with ground-facing cameras and automation software. The technology was tested in a simulated regolith.
