Cumberland City Council has passed a motion to remove books depicting same-sex parents from the shelves of local libraries as part of its Library Strategy 2024-2027.

During the council meeting, the former mayor of Cumberland, Councillor Steve Christou, brought the amendment to ensure books “of this nature” did not find their way onto the shelves. “Just in case you’re not sure, we’re going to make it clear tonight that we hope to implement a policy that these kinds of books, same sex parents books, don’t find their way to our kids.Mr Christou told SkyNews.com.au he was contacted by a “distressed” parent which sparked his push to rid same sex parents books and materials from the council’s library service.
Councillor Diane Colman, who voted against the motion, got heated on the meeting room floor and said the matter was “about our freedoms”.
