John Reid has had stitches in his eyeball for 890 days, but it's meant his vision is now restored.
After once losing almost all of his vision, the 30-year-old can now see images of his cornea, retina and optic nerve displayed in high-definition on a screen at the Sydney Eye Hospital.Perhaps even more impressive, is that the images were taken on a machine that can be installed almost anywhere and operated by almost anyone."It's just crazy to think that one machine can do that.
"The doctor that I saw in Wagga Wagga told me that my eye could literally explode within a 24-hour period because of how bad the infection had got."However, since then, Mr Reid has had to make regular 10-hour round trips to the city for check-ups.Mr Reid is being treated at the newly named Gadigal Eye Clinic in Sydney, which is designed to offer a welcoming and culturally safe space for First Nations patients, whilst treating a range of vision impairments.
"The images are sent through the cloud and connect with us here at the eye hospital, where we are on call, 24/7, every sub-specialty covered. "Cameras can be put in each community, staff can be trained, networks created… so we can manage patients virtually, and if necessary, bring them down for face-to-face care."Health Minister Ryan Park acknowledged the lack of specialists in rural and remote areas makes it harder to close the gap."I'll be talking to the healthcare professionals…about how we can roll out this type of model right across regional rural NSW.
