Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone moved one step closer to defending her Olympic title in the 400-meter hurdles.

Allyson Felix. Florence Griffith Joyner. Wilma Rudolph. That McLaughlin-Levrone is poised to accomplish this on the day after her 25th birthday makes it more remarkable. She is just entering her prime.
To think: Her time in the semifinals where she glided across the finish line would have crushed a long-standing world record until 2019. The mark of 52.34 seconds, set by Yuliya Pechonkina of Russia in 2003, stood for almost 16 years. McLaughlin-Levrone, who set the world record a fifth time at 50.65 at the U.S. trials, ran 52.17 without pushing herself.
Bol easily qualified for the final as well, in 52.57 seconds. She is the reigning world champion in the event after McLaughlin-Levrone missed much of last season with a knee injury.
