Thousands of rail workers in Sydney have carried out work bans and critical maintenance was prevented by the Electrical Trades Union (ETU), resulting in widespread delays and cancellations across the city's rail network on Wednesday. The disruptions are impacting commutes across Sydney, with some passengers waiting for up to 48 minutes for trains.

Industrial action preventing critical maintenance and the resumption of major work bans by thousands of rail workers have caused crippling delays and cancellations across Sydney’s rail network on Wednesday.

Work bans at the Rail Operations Centre at Green Square, as well as go-slows by drivers on some sections of track where they can usually travel at more than 80 km/h, are also compounding the delays.Delays are impacting commutes across Sydney. After a Christmas and New Year truce, the Rail Tram and Bus Union restarted 10 major work bans on Wednesday, including the go-slow, a ban on members working with contractors, and another that prevents work to reinstate train services if they have been cancelled. The RTBU and ETU are among six unions involved in a protracted dispute with the state government over a new pay deal.
