It’s futile to attempt to distil’s plot, but it sees its titular heroine , a wide-eyed “astronavigatrix”, travel to faraway planets in the 41st century to retrieve “a positronic ray” from the villain Durand Durand, whom Earth’s inhabitants fear may use it to cause mass destruction. Character-wise, Barbarella – who’s experience of the world is all peace and love – is naive to the point of comic absurdity, particularly when it comes to sex .
