Thousands of rail workers in Sydney are poised to launch industrial action after a court ruling in their favor. The NSW government's attempt to halt the action by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) was unsuccessful, potentially leading to significant disruptions to the train network during the holiday season.
Sydney's train network faces disruption after the NSW government lost its legal challenge against industrial action by thousands of rail workers . The Federal Court dismissed the government's attempt to block action by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union ( RTBU ). Union Secretary Toby Warnes stated that industrial action would resume immediately, potentially leading to a shutdown of the rail network if the government doesn't agree to 24-hour train services.
Warnes emphasized that RTBU members are prepared to take whatever measures are necessary to achieve their demands. Previous industrial action planned by the union includes distance limits for drivers and disabling Opal card readers. The government indicated its intention to pursue further legal measures to prevent disruption during the Christmas period, including filing a section 424 with the Fair Work Commission to protect New Year's Eve. The RTBU has already voted in favor of further industrial action starting December 28, raising concerns about potential commuter chaos on New Year's Eve
