Rebel forces claim they have captured the capital Damascus and ousted Syrian President Bashar al Assad after his 24-year rule, Reuters reports. It comes as two army officials reported that the Syrian president has left Damascus.

The rebels began their offensive in the province of Idlib, which for years had been the last anti-government stronghold in Syria.And then on Thursday they pushed south into the city of Hama. "Over 72 hours ago I was nervous there would be door-to-door fighting in parts of Damascus," he says."It's a little hard to understand why some of his most loyal fighters just decided to give up without fighting - they must understand if they are caught and are held accountable for their violations of human rights their future is dim."
The rebels made the announcement in a televised statement this morning, adding that all prisoners have been released. Thousands of Syrians, in cars and on foot, have congregated at a main square in the city chanting for freedom, according to Reuters.
