For the first analysis using human serum in the present study, we selected 57 young adults with MDD and 51 healthy controls without mood disorders , anxiety disorders , obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The groups were matched by sex, age and years of education.
For the GDF11 measurement, 10 ml of blood was withdrawn from each subject by venipuncture into a free-anticoagulant vacuum tube. The blood was immediately centrifuged at 3,500GDF11 serum levels were determined by sandwich-ELISA using the Human GDF-11/BMP-11 DuoSet ELISA kit according to the manufacturer’s instructions and as in Katsimpardi et al.
