Man United's Ella Toone, Rachel Williams and Mary Earps kept their WSL dreams alive against Brighton - here are the talking points from the game
Manchester United remain undefeated so far in the Women’s Super League 2023/24 campaign, tying 2-2 with Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday evening.
Goalkeeper showcase Mary Earps and Sophie Baggaley were phenomenal on Sunday night. If you’re not aware, Baggaley left United to join Brighton in the summer. She was a glorified cup keeper under Marc Skinner but showed the best of herself against her old team last night, surely an England call-up will soon follow.
Williams’ marker totally switched off, ball watched and let the United super-sub free so, that goal was deserved. Likewise, Toone’s thunderous effort, top bins, also was deserved. However, as a collective, it was a flat, dry, frustrated, lacklustre performance - not something we’re used to from Skinner’s squad.
Geyse on the right This worked well for the Brazilian star, however, it's not good news for Nikita Parris and Lucia Garcia who spent last season brawling for that spot. Geyse found she had more space to exploit and create chances on the flanks, changing with Melvine Malard and wow are they a force to be reckoned with.
The middle three Let's talk Toone, Katie Zelem and Hinata Miyazawa. Three incredible players but also three very attacking-minded centre-midfielders and it didn’t work in United’s favour. Miyazawa found plenty of space and enjoyed the ball but Zelem struggled to get involved in the game and impact play with her long balls which would’ve paid off well with Malaard or Geyse’s pace. Then there seemed to be no room for Toone.
