Taft's Malik White accepts a harsh reality after missing out on spot in UIL state championships.

In the age of fully automatic timing, the clock doesn’t lie in track. That’s a brutal reality when there’s a spot in the UIL state championships on the line, as Taft senior Malik White learned Saturday. White, one of the state’s top 110-meter hurdlers, missed an automatic qualifying spot by the narrowest of margins - five thousandths of a second to be exact. That’s about as close as an eyelash. White finished third at the Region IV- 6A 110 hurdles with a time of 14.286 seconds.

Vote for San Antonio's best high school basketball players As White raced in lane four, he focused on keeping his left heel up as he maneuvered over the 10 hurdles. “In the blocks, I thought as long as I don’t hit the back of my heel, I won’t buckle,” White said. “And then the third to last hurdle, I tapped it wrong, and it started buckling. The last hurdle, I hit it pretty hard and I started buckling down.” White got past the finish line and hit the ground in pain.
