Mario's was attacked by a thug on Wednesday, March 25
Nottinghamshire Police has insisted it takes reports of hate crime 'extremely seriously' after the owners of a takeaway criticised the force's response when its windows were smashed. Mario's Fast Food on Ilkeston Road had its windows smashed by a hooded thug on the night of Monday, March 25.
Mr Arsalan said: "We are scared. We asked the police: 'What if he comes again while we're open?' They just told us we'd just have to call 999. But we don't want to have to wait for something to happen for it to be looked into. We know who it is. We have CCTV. Since then, they say a man frequently walks by hurling abuse and shouting racial slurs, but because he'd never entered the shop, they ignored it. On a recent occasion, Mr Shaukat says the man came in with his dog but left again after being ignored.
Then, after checking the CCTV, the pair realised the suspect was a man they believed to be the harasser. They rang police back to report it as a hate crime, knowing he'd previously been racist to them. In total, they are forking out around £2,000, which is in addition to the potential £1,500 they lost in trade while having to spend a day closed clearing up the damage. It's something they feel the offender should pay for as part of his punishment - but if the police don't come, that won't happen.
