The effects of semaglutide (administered once weekly) on the outcomes of kidney disease.

By Dr. Sushama R. Chaphalkar, PhD.May 28 2024Reviewed by Lily Ramsey, LLM In a recent study published in Kidney International Reports, researchers investigated the effects of semaglutide on kidney disease outcomes and changes in KDIGO risk categories in participants with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease or high cardiovascular risk.

GLP-1 receptor agonists are used in T2D treatment for their benefits on hyperglycemia, weight management, and CV safety. Some show improved CV outcomes and beneficial effects on kidney disease, such as reducing albuminuria and slowing kidney function loss. Additionally, they sought to determine whether semaglutide, compared to placebo, could alter participants' KDIGO risk categories over the treatment duration.

Participant-data from the PIONEER 6 trial were excluded due to the lack of systematic UACR collection. Semaglutide demonstrated consistent benefits across KDIGO risk categories, with fewer participants experiencing the composite kidney disease endpoint, smaller eGFR slope declines, and smaller UACR increases compared to placebo.
