The Taliban has confirmed the release of American citizen Ryan Corbett, who was detained in Afghanistan in 2022, in exchange for Khan Muhammad, an Afghan Taliban member serving a life sentence in the United States for narcoterrorism charges.
The Taliban confirmed they were holding Ryan Corbett , an American arrested in Afghanistan in August 2022 and classified by the State Department as wrongfully detained. His family expressed immense gratitude for his release after 894 challenging days. The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that American citizens had been released in exchange for Khan Muhammad , an Afghan Taliban member serving a life sentence in California for narcoterrorism and heroin distribution charges.
Muhammad was convicted in 2008 after seeking to acquire rockets for attacks on Americans and their allies in Afghanistan and purchasing opium intended for heroin production and distribution in the United States. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed to NBC News that two U.S. nationals had been released in exchange for Muhammad but declined to disclose their identities. Senior Taliban officials with direct knowledge of the negotiations revealed that the Biden administration had been in talks with the Taliban for an exchange of Americans detained in Afghanistan for Afghans held in U.S. custody. Both the Corbett family and the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended their thanks to the Qatari government for its crucial mediation efforts. Corbett, a long-time resident of Afghanistan before the 2021 withdrawal of U.S.-led forces, was visiting the country at the time of his arrest. He reportedly experienced declining health during his detention. The Corbett family expressed their hope that Ryan, George Glezmann, and Mahmoud Habibi would be returned home together, acknowledging the pain their good fortune might bring to the families of the other two Americans. They pledged to continue praying and fighting for their swift release. The Taliban had accused the three Americans of spying and preaching Christianity in Afghanistan, a country governed according to Islamic law. During his four years in office, President Biden has brought back more than 75 American citizens and residents detained worldwide, including through prisoner swaps
