“bants” lands as sexist and offensive. This is the thin edge of a wedge of culture-driven misogynistic behaviour that has crept into the classrooms in the past 15 years. It starts with sniggered “clunge” references and ends withWhile teacher and author Matt Pinkett doesn’t draw a direct correlation between the two, they are both expressions of the issues he’s addressed in his work attempting to help teachers, parents and ultimately society understand and deal with teenage boys.
Affable and thoughtful, Pinkett isn’t your average English teacher. Tall, well-built, with a skinhead and a South London accent, he confronts difficult subjects candidly and with refreshing honesty. His first book,, set out to determine why boys underperform in school and suffer increasing mental health issues, sexist attitudes, and an inability to express emotions.
Increasingly, teachers are having to deal with issues that traditionally fell to parents, such as discussions about mental health, relationships, the impact of social media and pornography. Pinkett, father to a young daughter, argues that teachers are often better placed to understand these than parents.
