Laura Enriquez Chávez and Asunción Enriquez Chávez, sisters over 80 years old, are making their artistic debut at Zona Maco , Latin America's largest art fair, this week. Although this exhibition marks their first international showing, the sisters, who operate under the studio name 'Taller Los Tepalcates', have been creating distinctive ceramic pieces for decades in their hometown of Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca .
Their work draws inspiration from the vibrant local fauna, resulting in surreal, fantastical creatures like crocodiles, roosters, dolphins, and coyotes, which seem to emerge from another realm. The sisters' unique technique involves covering their creations with tepalcates, broken fragments of clay that chip off larger pots during firing. This, combined with their imaginative visual language and the use of simple kitchen tools to shape the clay, elevates the traditional vernacular of Atzompa pottery into a unique artistic expression. Taller Los Tepalcates was invited to collaborate with AGO Projects, a Mexico City-based gallery, and Elise Durbecq, a Mexico-based designer, for the exhibition 'Earthling; Life through Earth'. The sisters worked with Durbecq to develop a series of exuberant and detailed works, including lamps, tables, large vessels, and tableware, showcasing a sense of lightness and playful humor. The exhibition also features a series of paintings by Oaxaca-based artist Nanashy Mauro, whose work explores the absurdity of modern habitats. Mauro's paintings are presented alongside the ceramic works, creating a dialogue between the two mediums and forming a universe of animated sculptures. The works are arranged by families and typologies on blue, stepped plinths forming a quadrant in the space, allowing visitors to interact with and view the pieces both individually and as a group. AGO Projects and Durbecq aim to highlight the quality of the paintings and their embedded sense of humor, believing they complement the ceramic works and create a captivating and thought-provoking experience for viewers
