Tánaiste Micheál Martin has dismissed proposals for the Twelfth of July to become a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland.

He said the government would "always consider things in the round", but he added: "The feedback we got when we did Covid bank holiday was I think industry and others wanted to draw a breath in terms of what the potential impact would be on the economy." The reception at Iveagh House on Thursday evening follows a Westminster launch of the report held at the end of May.

"However, ongoing political uncertainty makes this a significantly more challenging task. Without local political leadership and the restoration of the Assembly, the Executive and the North South Ministerial Council, Northern Ireland cannot fully benefit from the opportunities in front of it."
