The transit center has placed 43 calls to dispatch services since the beginning of 2024, or about one call every other day.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Public transportation helps keep the Golden Heart beating, but unrest is simmering among some MACS Transit employees dealing with regular safety hazards, a customer service representative says.
Garcia recounted numerous recent problems, holding the incident reports as he spoke. “Just last week we had a bus driver who had a taser pointed at them on the bus, and the patron followed her around on the bus pointing the taser at her, and she essentially couldn’t leave the bus and was held hostage on the bus,” he said.
Fairbanks Emergency Communications Center data obtained by Newscenter Fairbanks shows the transit center has placed 43 calls since the beginning of 2024, including both 911 and non-emergency lines. As a rate, that equates to about one call every other day. “We’re doubtful as to what it is the incident reports are doing. We’re doubtful at least a little bit about the process, but if anything, they’re good for keeping a paper trail,” he said. That’s why in addressing the borough assembly Thursday, Garcia placed focus on onsite security — presumably a better method for halting safety concerns with more immediacy.
