The modern art museum at Liverpool's Royal Albert Dock will undergo a comprehensive £29.7 million renovation, extending its closure until 2027.
Tate Liverpool will remain closed until 2027 as extensive renovation work continues at the art gallery . The modern art museum at the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool city centre closed its doors on October 16, 2023, for a £29.7 million refurbishment. Initially, a spokesperson had stated that the project would be completed by 2025. However, gallery director Helen Legg recently announced that the closure will extend to 2027, although the budget will remain unchanged.
A Tate spokesperson confirmed that construction is expected to finish in 2026, with a target reopening date set for 2027. The exact date will be announced closer to the time.Contractors Gilbert Ash have already undertaken significant work, stripping out the building's outdated infrastructure and revealing more of the Victorian warehouse's original character. This process has brought more natural light into the structure and opened up previously inaccessible views over the River Mersey. In addition, a full roof renovation has been carried out, including improvements to insulation, lead sheeting, joinery, windows, and guttering. The next phase of the project will focus on establishing a new art hall on the ground floor. Existing gallery spaces across three further floors will be reconfigured to provide panoramic views of the River Mersey. The renovation also addresses critical infrastructure challenges and aims to end the gallery's reliance on fossil fuels. This will involve removing gas boilers and transitioning to an all-electric operation. Ms Legg expressed her enthusiasm about the progress made: 'We're delighted to see the new vision for Tate Liverpool beginning to unfold as we reveal more of the Victorian brick walls and open up the former warehouse's deep spaces and riverside views. When visitors return, they will be able to enjoy the amazing atmosphere of this historic building, reconnecting with the heritage and history of the site, while enjoying improved access to the full breadth of the national collection.' Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram echoed Ms Legg's optimism: 'This transformation will be a bold reimagining of one of our region's most iconic landmarks and it's fantastic to see up close the vision for Tate Liverpool as it starts to take shape. When complete, I'm confident it will continue to offer visitors a world-class cultural experience, with stunning views across our famous river Mersey and spaces that beautifully blend the gallery's rich history with a modern, vibrant future. It's a real milestone for the Liverpool City Region, reinforcing our position as a powerhouse for culture and creativity.
