The Ibrox stalwarts have been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia to reunite with Steven gerrard at Al Ettifaq.
The rumours have been swirling around for a few weeks so I can’t say I was surprised the other day when the Saudis confirmed James Tavernier is back on their Pro League shopping list.
Tav and Goldson have been superb signings over the years and the number of games they have wracked up between them tells you how vital they’ve been to a number of different gaffers. But deep down, the two of them would admit to having just one stinging regret from their time together in Glasgow – they’ll be annoyed that they haven’t won more trophies over all those years because that’s what you’re judged on at Rangers.
I wouldn’t hold it against either of them if they were tempted to make a few quid in the Middle East at this stage in their careers. They’re both in their 30s now and playing football is a short career. If an opportunity comes up to make your family financially secure for the rest of their lives, it can be hard to turn down.
Sunday’s win over Hearts means there’s a Scottish Cup Final against Celtic to look forward to at the end of it all. But, if it was me, I’d be tucking that away in bed right now and saying, ‘I’ll come back for you in four weeks mate!’. Right now the only thing that should be on anyone’s mind is St Mirren in Paisley on Sunday lunchtime.
Balogun, Diomande and Cantwell were particularly impressive and those three names would be the first on my team sheet for Sunday even if that means leaving big Goldson on the bench. For me, where it’s almost always been a question of who plays next to Goldson, it’s now about choosing the best man to partner Balogun.
