Families currently receiving Tax Credits have been issued a three-month warning that their benefits will be phased out. They must proactively apply for Universal Credit to avoid losing their financial support.
Families claiming Tax Credits have been given a three-month warning that their benefit is coming to an end. And they must take action to ensure they continue getting financial support. Tax Credits – including Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credits – are one of five older-style benefits being phased out by the government. The benefits will be replaced by Universal Credit in a move designed to simplify the benefits system.
However the process, known as ‘managed migration’, is not automatic and you must claim Universal Credit or risk losing your benefits altogether. Benefits being phased out The five benefits being phased out are: What do I need to do if I claim Tax Credits? Migration letters are being sent to people who claim Tax Credits when they are due to move to Universal Credit. These letters are called Migration Notices. When you receive a Migration Notice it will contain a deadline that you need to claim Universal Credit by. This date is usually three months from the date you receive the letter. If you fail to claim by the deadline you could lose your benefits or have a gap in payments. You do not need to take action until you receive a letter. Sir Stephen Timms, minister for social security and disability, has told families who have already received a letter to act sooner rather than later. He said: 'As we start the new year, families across the country are thinking about what’s next. 'With this mind, I encourage everyone who has received a migration notice to act as quickly as possible and move onto Universal Credit. 'We know how quickly time can pass when you’re busy – and with just three months to go until Tax Credits close on the 5th of April – now is the time to respond to your Universal Credit migration notice to continue receiving benefits.' © Shutterstock How do I apply for Universal Credit?
