Research conducted by the Taxpayers' Alliance found the cost of funding for LGBT-themed events has rocketed by £150,000 compared to last year.
Taxpayers had to foot a £650,000 bill for drag bingo, rainbow fudge and pronoun badges to celebrate Pride Month.
Joanna Marchong, the TPA's investigations campaign manager, called on the celebrations to be 'dialled down' until public sector bodies could sort out their finances. The Local Government Association, which represents 315 of the 317 councils in England, said: 'It is for individual councils to make decisions about how best to invest their resources on behalf of their residents.'
The cost of funding the events is a six-figure increase on last year when £554,000 was spent by police forces, fire services, NHS trusts and councils But the flags were celebrated by senior civil servants. Corin Robertson, director-general of finance and corporate at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office , posted a photo of the flags on social media with the caption: 'Happy bisexuality awareness week.'
