In her slogan cap and cycling shorts, Swift conjured the spirit of both Princess Diana and a normcore dad.
and an archetypal ’90s dad is perhaps an unnecessary conflation of terms. Some of the most well-known looks worn by the Princess of Wales were very much dad-coded: the orthopaedic trainers, the slogan sweatshirts, the cycling shorts, the novelty caps and the outsized blazers. And yet Swift has conjured the spirit of both.
On an afternoon visit to her music studio, she wore a slogan cap with a Shania Twain band T-shirt, cycling shorts and New Balance sneakers. With the exception of theknocking against her side, Swift looked like a regular-shmegular girl on day out in New York. But such is the allure of this musician’s wardrobe: its ability to be just as accessible and “relatable” as her lyrics about home-for-the-holidays crushes and prom queens and pet cats and small town stasis.
The bottle-green ruffle socks are perhaps the most Swiftian accent of all. I imagine Princess Di would have thought them too naïve , but Swift’s world is one of girlhood:, tennis skirts, and nostalgic memories of high-school stirred into her songwriting. “Give me back my girlhood,” she sings on “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve”. “It was mine first.”
