A letter from Texas education chief Mike Morath to the charter network reveals reasons for state probe, says more might develop.
The Texas Education Agency has appointed a conservator to oversee Great Hearts Texas , a San Antonio -based charter network currently under investigation for allegations that include failing to report employee misconduct and to complete criminal background checks. It comes at the request of the Great Hearts Texas board, which voted in April to invite the intervention after a state probe revealed that an undisclosed number of teachers were not properly vetted for employment.
At an April 17 meeting, board president Jim Rahn said a former employee who had not completed the onboarding process turned out to have been ineligible to be hired. “Understanding the gravity of these situations, this evening the Great Hearts Texas board will invite the TEA to appoint a conservator for HR processes such as onboarding and background checks to ensure we are above reproach in everything we do,” Rahn said.
