A teacher in the West Midlands, Cheryl Bennett, was driven into hiding after a doctored video falsely accused her of making a racist remark. The video, originally recorded on a doorbell camera during the last general election, was edited to include fabricated subtitles. The incident sparked a wave of abuse, leading to threats against Bennett and her family. She received 'substantial' damages and costs from Akhmed Yakoob, the lawyer who shared the video, after taking legal action for defamation and a breach of her data protection rights.

Ms Bennett has now told the Sunday Times she has been awarded 'substantial' damages and costs from Yakoob after she took legal action for defamation and a breach of her data protection rights. “I was just constantly in survival mode,” she said. “Because there was days where I just thought: ‘Would it be easier if I was to just end my life?’ Just because I felt like my career would never be same."
