A union said teachers are 'very concerned' about the impact of the cuts on pupils

A secondary school in Nottingham will close for two days while teachers go on strike over concerns with staffing levels. Members of the National Education Union and NASUWT at the Trinity Catholic School in Aspley will walk out on Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 8.

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi-Academy Trust, which runs the school, said it is working with the union to reach a resolution. The trust said it was being forced to reduce costs due to the government's "chronic underfunding" of schools. In a statement, the NEU said: "Our members are dedicated staff many of whom have worked at the school for many years, are very concerned about the impact of these changes on the children.

"Cutting frontline staff is never the best solution in education." James McGeachie, CEO of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi-Academy Trust said: "It is disappointing that have taken the decision to strike, but we do fully understand that significant financial pressures at the school have resulted in changes which will impact on class sizes.

"The Trinity Catholic School is currently significantly outside these recommended staffing levels and the changes are necessary to bring the school in line with our other secondary schools and to ensure that the school can operate within the funding it receives. We are still working actively with teaching unions to seek a resolution and try and avoid this strike action.”
