Pupils have faced several days of cancelled lessons since February due to strike action 🔴 But the Schools Minister has now admitted they could have been averted if the Government had communicated more clearly that their pay offer was fully funded

could have been averted if the Government had communicated more clearly that their pay offer was fully funded, a minister has admitted., said the ballot for repeated walkouts “might have gone a different way” if teachers had been reassured that the offer of a 4.5 per cent pay rise, plus a £1,000 lump sum payment, would not come out of existing schools budgets.

“That is unnecessary because a) we were having very good discussions with all four unions and b) I think it was a very good offer that we put to the unions. “We are where we are now and the school teachers’ review body will be giving advice about what that pay settlement should be and they will make the recommendations at the end of the month.”

The newly published figures, which are based on assessments made in 2021, show attainment between the highest achieving students and lowest-achieving students has narrowed, while the gap between girls and boys has also decreased, despite disruption caused by the pandemic. Mr Gibb said this fall for girls’ reading was not statistically significant and the overall picture was very encouraging.
