Track-and-field star Gabby Thomas wins the 200-m gold medal for Team USA at the Paris Olympics,

the Harvard graduate who also holds a master's degree in public health, won the 200-m sprint Wednesday night at the Stade de France, the first U.S. track athlete to win gold in this event sincefinished second, with a time of 22.08, to take silver while Brittany Brown of the U.S. earned bronze, with a time of 2.20.

The U.S. continues to dominate the track-and field-competition. Thomas’ victory gives the Americans five golds in the sport: no other country has more than two golds. Cole Hocker added to that haul in a surprise win in the 1500 m earlier Tuesday: in what was supposed to be a two-man duel between Josh Kerr of Great Britain and Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Hocker outkicked them both down the stretch, setting a new Olympic record in the process.

Overall, the United States has piled up 16 track-and-field medals so far: Kenya and Jamaica has the second-most medals, with fourThomas has improved her global standing steadily, winning 200-m bronze in Tokyo, a silver at last year’s world championships, and now gold.
