Every coach has a go-to play. For Mike Leach, that play was 'stick.' In baseball terms, think of it as an 'out pitch.' Now, let's pretend you're a new player studying film with FB_FilmAnalysis, learning Leach's favorite play. Listen up, freshman!

Imagine you’re a wide-eyed freshman starting your first college football install meeting. During install meetings, concepts are introduced and the basics of the plays are taught. It could happen on the field, in meeting rooms, or, in this particular case, onhead coach Mike Leach, one of the forefathers of the air raid offense, is going to install an air raid staple: the “stick” concept.

“Sometimes we leave the back at home. That’s not for protection’s sake,” Leach said. “Depending on the nature of how they play it, you might want to do it because you don’t want to cloud it up. Like, if they are trying to jam the box in a goal-line situation, you already have great leverage on your stick route. You don’t want to send that back out there, pulling a linebacker out there, but when you already have a ‘give-me.

“The first letter of each play puts into a concept,” Moorhead said. “This begins with a ‘G’ because it’s a graze concept. If we are just reading the end, that’s our base concept so those plays begin with ‘B.’ If it’s a cutoff concept, like split zone or backside flow, one that begins with ‘C.’ If we have a graze concept, that means we are trying to influence the end and then work out, so this is ‘giraffe’ to the right and ‘gazelle’ to the left.

If the quarterback pulls the ball, he’s going to attack the pitch key, which is the final unblocked second- or third-level defender outside the give key. The tight end bluffs off the pitch key.
