Teen accused of murdering student feared he 'f***** it' and 'was done for' just moments before stabbing, jury hears

A teenager accused of the murder of a student in Bury has told a court he feared he was "done for" just moments before the stabbing took place. Abdikarim Abdalla Ahmed, 18, tragically died after being knifed to the chest by a combat knife with 'severe' force outside the entrance to the Mill Gate shopping centre in Bury on March 11.

Jurors were previously told that the teenage defendant received a caution in 2019 for carrying a knife in public and has "convictions for offences involving use of a knife in public places" in 2020. On Monday , the defendant admitted to the court to having carried knives in the past and having a "challenging" time growing up, that saw him excluded from his high school.

After going to the takeaway, the defendant told the court that he was making his way back to the Millgate shopping centre to wait for his girlfriend when he saw Abdi and his brother approaching him. He says he was then attacked and said he "thought something bad would happen" to him. When asked: “What was your intention when you stabbed him?” by prosecutor Alaric Bassano, the accused answered: “To get him off me, to be honest. The only reason I produced the knife was to get Abdi off me."

The jury heard the defendant later discarded of the knife in a bin along with his clothes because he “didn’t want to be returning home with blood on me”. He told the court he "did not think" the stab wound would be so severe and that he was not trying to cause Abdi serious injury.
