In an unusual love story, two British teenage sweethearts have finally tied the knot, six decades after their parents called off their engagement.
However, their plans were shattered when Jeanette's parents discovered their daughter's engagement and were outraged. The couple was forbidden from marrying, and Jeanette was devastated when her parents ordered her to remain on the Isle of Wight.The heartbroken teenagers eventually went their separate ways - beginning new lives on opposite sides of the globe. Len married an Australian woman and had three children, while Jeanette remained in the UK and became a married mum-of-two.
The couple reignited their 1960s romance and established a home together in Stevenage, Hertfordshire in 2018. Last month, at the ages of 79 and 78, they exchanged vows in the presence of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He said: “I was daunted not knowing what her reaction would be or if I would even see her. I’m very surprised by the outcome of my trip down there and very happy too.”
