New research reveals a dramatic improvement in diagnosing and curing people living with hepatitis C in rural communities using both telemedicine and support from peers with lived experience in drug use.

"We have life-saving medications to treat hepatitis C," Seaman said. "This study shows that finding unique ways to improve access to treatment -; beyond traditional health care settings -; is crucial for supporting people who use drugs." Those who received care through telehealth were almost seven times more likely to be treated for hepatitis C and four times more likely to achieve viral clearance after six months, the study found.

"This is one of those rare situations where spending money will actually save money," said Seaman, who also serves as medical director of Hepatitis and HIV Services for Central City Concern, a Portland-area nonprofit that provides housing, health care and addiction treatment services. "Hepatitis C causes liver cancer, loss of productivity, diabetes and all kinds of complications that cost lives and money.
