Authorities warned of high risks of heat-related illnesses as India continues to experience a scorching heat wave that has caused numerous fatalities
Men cover their head with cloth during a blistering afternoon in New Delhi on May 29, 2024, amid an ongoing heatwave Temperatures in India’s capital soared to a record high of 52.3°C on Wednesday as a blistering heat wave prompted authorities issue a red alert warning.
The IMD warned there was a “very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heatstroke in all ages” with “extreme care needed for vulnerable people”. It comes amid an unrelenting heat wave which has ravaged parts of northwest and central India over the past few weeks, with numerous fatalities and thousands of cases of heatstroke reported across the country.
On Wednesday, the IMD warned residents in Delhi to stay indoors and keep hydrated. The searing temperatures led to a surge in electricity demand for air conditioning and subsequent power outages.
