The Met Office has warned that the predicted 40°C temperatures are a 'sign of things to come' due to climate change
“Tuesday is looking like it will be the hottest day, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see 41°C come up somewhere. The area consistently looking to be the hottest is around Cambridge and Northamptonshire in the afternoon on Tuesday,” said Mr Keates, adding it would be “unprecedentedly hot” for the whole UK.– a “national emergency” where “illness and death may occur among the fit and healthy, and not just in high-risk groups”.the heatwave “is definitely a sign of things to come”.
Although 40°C will still be a “rare event” in the future, Mr Madge said: “The direction of travel with increasing climate change is that these events become more and more possible. I’m sure, even in the next 20 to 30 years, 40°C would still be rare, but we are loading the dice to make those kinds of events more possible.”
But there are also concerns about the wider population who are not used to extreme heat amid attempts to downplay the heatwave as “just summer”, said Prof Cloke. “It’s right to enjoy the summer. We can enjoy the hot temperatures but only if we realise that they also pose a risk to us.” Mr Madge, of the Met Office, said: “If you’re enduring high temperatures by day but then you get cooler nights allowing you effectively to recharge, that is perhaps less dangerous than not being able to get any respite because of high temperatures overnight.”
