There were always going to be growing pains but it was hard to predict Manchester United hurting so much.
Ten Hag finally moved to address the situation and in came a man he knew well from his time at Ajax. Andre Onana was just coming off a great season in which he shone in Inter's run to the Champions League final, putting in an excellent display of passing in Istanbul, and appeared to be the exact profile United were looking for. There was no bad-mouthing of the signing at all.
It was going to take time for the outfielders in front of Onana to get used to the new style of goalkeeper, to be ready for the types of passes they'd be receiving, at the best of times. But multiple issues have compounded to make the transition even rockier. In times like these, as simple as it sounds, a return to basics is often the best way forward. Even if it's admitting defeat, taking a step backwards or unfashionable. Ten Hag is no stranger to it.
