So will we all need smartphones now?
A group of tenants in New York have decided to sue their landlord for putting an electronic lock on the front of the building that rendered their old-fashioned keys useless.
The new security system, called Latch, requires the tenants to use an app on their smartphone to access the building’s lobby. The keyless Latch device on an apartment building ‘It’s ridiculous that everyone is spending all this money to go to court just to get a key,” said Mary Beth McKenzie, 72, an artist who has lived in the Manhattan building for decades. As well as the inconvenience of having to use a phone rather than a proper key, there’s a data protection issue at play here too. The Latch system comes with an 84-page contract that says any information collected by the app goes to the building’s owner.
Latch is reportedly being used in 1,000 residential buildings around New York. The landlords of the building – a limited liability company – says it installed Latch to provide tenants with greater security after a burglary in August 2018. They also say that the GPS notification feature is optional and can be disabled at any time.
