Locals in Tenerife have issued a stern warning to tourists as the island faces collapse due to overwhelmed amenities and rising house prices
Holidaymakers in Tenerife have been greeted with signs from angry locals telling them to 'go home'. The tourists were met with harsh messages like 'Tourists go home,' 'My misery your paradise,' and 'Average salary in Canary Islands is 1,200' plastered on walls in Palm-Mar, a small town in the largest of the Canary Islands.
Last year, reports emerged of anti-tourist graffiti in Tenerife, urging people to go home. Last month in Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria, the message 'tourists and digital nomads go home' was scrawled on the walls, reports the Mirror.Professor Carmelo J. Leon from Las Palmas University said that most people in the Canary Islands like having tourists visit.
The switch from hotels to Airbnbs and other holiday homes has made it harder for local people to afford houses, especially in busy places like Tenerife. Last month, Doctor Matias Gonzalez Hernandez, another expert at Las Palmas University, said we need to watch out because more people might not have homes soon.He thinks we need to build more public houses, make better schools, and improve roads for the growing number of people using them.
The Canary Islands Tourism Board has played down the issue, suggesting the numbers of visitors heading to the island chain was sustainable.
