World number one tennis player Jannik Sinner has been suspended for three months after testing positive for the anabolic steroid clostebol. Despite initially being cleared of doping, WADA appealed the decision and Sinner has now accepted a three-month ban.
Tennis star Jannik Sinner has been handed a three-month doping ban after testing positive for the anabolic steroid clostebol in March. The 23-year-old, ranked number one in the world and a two-time Grand Slam champion in 2024, initially blamed accidental contamination from a massage by his physiotherapist. Despite an independent tribunal clearing him of doping in August, the World Anti-Doping Agency ( WADA ) appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport ( CAS ).
WADA argued that the finding of 'no fault or negligence' was incorrect and sought a ban of between one and two years. Sinner, who maintains his innocence, has now accepted a three-month ban and settled the case with WADA. The ban will run from February 9, 2025, to May 4, 2025. This means Sinner will be able to return to tennis for his home tournament, the Italian Open in Rome, before the French Open, scheduled for late May. This decision has sparked a backlash, with Nick Kyrgios expressing his disappointment on X, stating, 'Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis does not exist.' Initially, Sinner had been exonerated after an independent tribunal accepted his explanation that clostebol entered his system through a massage from his physiotherapist, who had used a spray containing the steroid to treat a cut. Sinner subsequently dismissed his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, and his trainer, Umberto Ferrara, who had supplied Naldi with the over-the-counter spray. While Sinner was required to forfeit his ranking points from Indian Wells and prize money, he continued competing, ultimately winning the US Open in September, adding to his Australian Open title from earlier in the year. Sinner's lawyer stated, 'It is clear that Jannik had no intent, no knowledge, and gained no competitive advantage.' They added, 'Regrettably, errors made by members of his team led to this situation.'
