A pre-inquest review hearing revealed concerns about the death of Nathan Richard Walters, a 37-year-old from Manchester who died at St John’s Hospice in Lancaster in April 2023. His sister, Danielle Walters, alleged he was handcuffed while sleeping in prison, and his condition worsened during transfers between prisons and the hospital. Assistant Coroner Nicholas Rheinberg stated there was no 24-hour nursing cover at one of the prisons where Walters was initially detained, and he was moved to a dedicated medical wing due to his pain. Walters died in hospice care at a late stage, and the coroner said there was no suggestion that any action could have saved his life. A full inquest is scheduled for June 2, 2023.

The sister of a terminally-ill man who died in custody has claimed he was handcuffed whilst sleeping.

Nathan's sister Danielle Walters attended the hearing remotely and said her terminally-ill brother complained of being handcuffed whilst asleep in prison. The court heard that while Walters was an inmate at HMP Garth, he complained of abdominal pain and was asked to undergo blood tests for diagnosis.Nathan died in St John's Hospice where he was taken "at a very late stage". Coroner Rheinberg said there was "no suggestion action could have been taken to save his life" and stated Walters died of natural causes.
