Terms of endearment are a love language, used to show affection to our nearest and dearest. While some are universal amongst English-speakers around the world, the way they’re used or said can differ by place.
Therefore, even though many terms of endearment used in Northern Ireland overlap with those used elsewhere, people who grew up here know them in a unique context. After all, we have our own spake in these parts. We decided to take a look at some of the words the people of Northern Ireland use lovingly towards each other. Pet Short for petal, often used between couples or by a person speaking to someone younger than them.Love Used by anyone to anyone, whether it’s someone you deeply love or someone you’re vaguely fond of.Lad A man or boy, generally reserved for someone who is either the same age as or younger than the speaker.Son/Boyo Used by older adults speaking to a young man or boy, both can be spoken with either affection or warning. “Thon doll’s never aff the batter, bless’er!”Missis Form of Mrs.
