Ghostwatch was broadcast on BBC1 on Halloween night in 1992 - but the mockumentary has never been shown in the UK since.
A TV show that spooked a generation was so terrifying that the BBC has never aired it again. One-off mockumentary Ghostwatch was broadcast on BBC1 on Saturday, October 31, 1992.
The show's premise was that a documentary crew were investigating reports of a ghost in "the most haunted house in Britain" - and it was based on the Enfield Poltergeist, an alleged real supernatural event at a council home in Enfield, London, between 1977 and 1979. Ghostwatch's writer Stephen Volk has since spoken out about the show, and how it would be much trickier in the digital world we currently live in. He previously told the Record: "You couldn't do what we did nowadays and get away with it. People would know in 30 seconds what was going on."
Top UK & World stories today After the show ended, terrified viewers complained to the Beeb in droves, an estimated 30,000 in total. Among them was a woman who claimed it induced her labour as well as a woman alleging to be Parkinson's mum. The most tragic tale to come from the show, however, was when it was blamed for the death of an 18-year-old. Martin Denham, who had learning difficulties, took his own life after he was "hypnotised and obsessed" by Ghostwatch, his parents claimed. Their complaint was not upheld by the regulation body that is now Ofcom.
