Olive growers across the Mediterranean faced the hottest summer on record in 2023, affecting crop yields, according to experts
Supermarket customers have been put on alert after the popular supermarkets experienced the largest price rises for essential kitchen staples like olive oil and sugar.
Granulated sugar followed close behind with a hike of 72.5% as it climbed from 69p to now demanding £1.20 - securing third and second places respectively on the list of supermarket inflation. But overtaking all other contenders is the price of olive oil which has leapt a colossal 120% from its 2021 cost of £3.65, to a whopping £8.04 in 2024.Climate change has been thrown in the spotlight as the culprit behind these soaring costs.
Iceland nailed the title for cheapest average costing bottle at £5.50, however, stocks only one type. Harvir Dhillon, an economist at the British Retail Consortium, shed light on the situation.
