The chain now has Express stores within 10 minutes of 80% of the UK population
The supermarket giant is set to move in to an empty unit on Fishergate as it continues an expansion which saw it open its 2000th Express store last month. Tesco now says 80% of the UK is within 10 minutes of one of those branches and its latest plan will see it add to an exiting presence in the city centre.
It already has a store on Friargate as well as others within a short distance but plans to add to that by opening a store near to the train station. A licensing application has been submitted for the new store and would see it open from 6am to midnight.Tesco has continued to roll out its Express stores as what it says is a "commitment to serving customers wherever, whenever and however they want to shop". It also says its ambition is to be the UK's most convenient retailer.
Announcing the 2,000th opening, Kevin Tindall, managing director of Tesco Convenience, said “This is an exciting milestone for the business as we continue to expand our store network to give us unrivalled proximity to customers looking for an easy and convenient shopping experience. Our colleagues in Express do a brilliant job serving their local communities and our growing Express network makes it even easier for customers to find great value in more places.
Meanwhile, Tesco is expected to reveal a dip in profits for the past year as the supermarket group grappled with rampant food and drink inflation. The UK’s largest retailer will update investors and analysts over its financial performance for the year to February in an update on Thursday April 13. A consensus of analysts has said Tesco is due to reveal a strong rise in sales but lower profits due to the challenging backdrop for costs. It is predicted to unveil a group adjusted operating profit of £2.6 billion for the year, which would be down from £2.8 billion a year earlier.
