Elon Musk, along with xAI and a consortium of investors, aims to acquire OpenAI and revert it to its original charitable mission as a non-profit research lab. This proposal comes amidst a long-standing feud between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman over the company's direction. Musk alleges OpenAI has strayed from its founding principles, while OpenAI argues it needs for-profit status to fund advanced AI development.
Tesla owner, who helped found OpenAI in 2015, says he wants to restore company to original charitable mission as non-profit research labMusk and his own AI start-up, xAI, along with a consortium of investment firms, say they want to buy OpenAI and revert it back to its original charitable mission as a non-profit research lab, according to Musk lawyer Marc Toberoff.
Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company last year, first in a California state court and later in federal court, alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a non-profit research lab benefiting the public good. US district judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has not yet ruled on Musk’s request but in court said it was a “stretch” for Musk to claim he will be irreparably harmed if she does not intervene to stop OpenAI from moving forward with its planned transition towards becoming a for-profit corporation.

Elon Musk's Support for Trump Sparks Consumer Backlash, Tesla Sales PlummetSales of Tesla vehicles have declined significantly worldwide, attributed by some experts to Elon Musk's support for Donald Trump and far-right groups. Tesla's sales figures have dropped sharply in multiple European countries, including the UK, Germany, Spain, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Norway. While Musk asserts that cheaper EVs planned for 2025 will boost sales, analysts suggest the decline may be due to reduced EV incentives and increased competition from Chinese brands like BYD.
