Tested: 1986 Nissan 300ZX Turbo Is Better but Far from Best

In a segment full of Porsche this and Corvette that, what of the humble Nissan 300ZX? With some updates, it's still not going to reach the top of the scrum, but it's much closer.

From the June 1986 issue of Car and Driver.Marketing 'experts' once said that no­body could sell more than 50,000 GT sports coupes per year. Right, guys. In 1984, the first full year of 300ZX produc­tion, Nissan sold 72,227 of its GTs. The automobile business is nothing if not un­predictable, though, and 1985 sales slipped to 66,743.

Even when ice and snow make the roads raw, unprovocative driving proves the ZX's rear drive surpris­ingly adept.Several makers offer electronic driver­-adjustable ride-and-handling settings, but Nissan's shock-control system seems the most crisply staged from one setting to the next. A twist of the console-mounted control knob to 'S' sets up a soft, billowy ride that eliminates harshness.
