TO secure its energy future, the government may now have to decide, once and for all, to incorporate nuclear energy into its national energy program. This seems to be the emerging view as the nation's leading scientists and scholars study the condition of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP).
The government must now decide what to do with the mothballed plant instead of just letting it sit as a white elephant in Morong, Bataan.
China and South Korea have built large nuclear plants in the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan under five years at $5 billion each, but these large projects are generally subject to construction delays and regulatory red tape.Small modular reactors are preferred because practically the whole nuclear vessel is factory-built and delivered to the site, thereby avoiding unnecessary construction delays.
