This method could significantly enhance the disposal of plastics that are almost impossible to break down with existing technologies.

A global research team has devised a method to decompose plastics and other materials into their smallest components using a laser, enabling their future reuse.

“This discovery has significant implications for addressing environmental challenges and advancing the field of green chemistry,” said Yuebing Zheng, one of the project leaders.Plastic pollution has escalated into a global environmental crisis, with millions of tons of plastic waste accumulating in landfills and oceans annually. Traditional methods of plastic degradation are typically energy-intensive, environmentally harmful, and ineffective.

The team used low-power light to break the chemical bonds in plastics and form new bonds, transforming the materials into luminescent carbon dots.
