Bochy’s office inside the San Francisco Giants stadium was only a few doors down from the late baseball icon Willie Mays.

“I was fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time with that man,” Bochy said Tuesday night. “Of course, what a legend he is. Could be the best, greatest player of all time, that’s how good he was.”. The Hall of Fame center fielder “passed away peacefully” according to a joint statement from Mays’ family and the Giants.

Mays batted .302, hit 660 home runs, totaled 3,283 hits, scored more than 2,000 runs and won 12 Gold Gloves in 22 seasons, the bulk of which were spent with the New York/San Francisco Giants. He won the 1954 World Series with the Giants, had his No. 24 retired by the franchise and was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot in 1979.
